On May 3rd, 2021, the Alexandria, VA city council voted to divest nearly $800,00 in funding for school police, and to reinvest those funds into mental health resources, as demanded by young people and organizers with Tenants and Workers United. TWU young people have been organizing since 2006 to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline and fully fund and implement restorative justice across Alexandria public schools. Students continue to organize to ensure the Alexandria School District terminate the memorandum of understanding with the Alexandria Police Department.
