October 2022
While responding to an incident between 2 students, a Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy pulled a 14-year-old girl by her hoodie, slammed her to the ground, and put his knees in her chest. The student kept repeating “Enough, enough, I can’t breathe,” but the officer refused to get up. The parents of the student as of October 27th, 2022, weren’t allowed to see the footage of the aggression against their child by the officer. Another Reynolds High Student and sibling of the assaulted student referenced their mother’s feelings on the situation, stating that “she doesn’t feel safe sending my sister back to school. We all are feeling unsafe.” Another student aware of the situation stated “Nobody feels safe to stay in school. They should have more counselors or violence prevention programs present at the school to actually talk, and even more, connect with students on that kind of level. My demands are getting people who can actually relate to students, and not people who work with criminals to treat us as criminals.” Students who started the group Students Against Oppression at Gresham High School have called for the immediate removal of the officer from Reynolds High School.
