Former Scranton police officer and school resource officer at West Scranton High School is being charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, official oppression, institutional sexual assault and other offenses. He is accused of having inappropriate sexual conduct with 5 young girls between 2009 and 2017, 4 of which were under 18, both at his home and at West Scranton High School where he was employed.

 A man who worked as a security guard at Hardy Middle School in Georgetown has been charged with sexually abusing an eighth-grade 14-year-old student seven years ago when he was 24 years old. The security guard was arrested, charged with two counts of first-degree child sex abuse, and released.

October 2017

A School District police officer at Las Vegas High School tased a student. The officer claimed the student was being aggressive towards staff and the student is facing charges. No disciplinary action was being taken against the officer.

A Nashville Metropolitan police officer and two teachers were arrested and indicted for counts of sexual battery, aggravated rape, and other related charges for sexual abuse of a 13-year-old boy. According to Metro police, all three adults were accused by a former student of sexual abuse that took place when the student was only thirteen years old.

A school resource officer used pepper spray on two middle school students at James Madison Middle School. According to the school, the two students were fighting one another. The incident took place in the school’s front office. Administrators requested a charge of disorderly conduct against one student who was allegedly involved.

Several students were pepper sprayed in the hallway of Patrick Henry High School after a school resource officer resorted to pepper gel spray in response to a fight. The school nurse treated both students and staff members who were exposed to the chemicals.

A school resource office deployed pepper spray after he failed to de-escalate a fight between two young female students at Meadow Woods Middle School. At least seven students were injured and one more was hospitalized as a result. At least two Latinx students spoke with a local news outlet following the incident, stating that they saw several more people were treated at the school’s clinic and that the pepper spray caused major disruptions to the school day. One of the injured students stated, “It hurts. It really hurts.”

A school police officer pepper sprayed eighteen middle schoolers at Miller Grove Middle School in Decatur following an alleged fight between to seventh graders. According to the school, the officer used the pepper spray to regain control of the incident when a teacher tried to intervene in the fight. At least one Black student spoke with a local news outlet, reporting that a female classmate lost consciousness as a result of the pepper spray. A grandmother of one of the injured students reported that students were crying and that her granddaughter was distraught.

April 2017

Eleven North High School students were exposed to pepper spray after a security officer employed by a private firm sprayed pepper spray at a male student. Allegedly, the security officer deployed the spray after asking a student to turn off music playing from his phone. After the student complied with this request, according to the school, the music came back on, prompting the security officer to attempt to take the student’s phone. During the incident, the officer sprayed pepper spray, directly impacting eleven students in the vicinity. The North Police Chief used the incident to advocate for funding for an SRO at the school.

A sheriff’s deputy sprayed pepper spray into a crowd of students during an alleged fight that stemmed from an argument between two female students at James M. Bennett High School. It was unclear if any other de-escalation measures were taken by law enforcement during the incident, and six students were arrested following a police response involving 25 officers.
